"Home-school kids meet high standards, scores surpass public school students" by Carole Innerst

"The growing home-schooling movement got a boost yesterday with release of a study showing that home-educated students do better academically than public-school students, even when the home-schooling parent has only a high-school diploma.
"The longer children are thaught at home, the better they score, according to the study.
"And unlike the public schools, where race often affects academic perfomance, the math and reading scores of minorities who are schooled at home are not significantly different from scores of whites being thaught at home.
"There are two- and only two- keys to educational succes: hard work and parental involvement", said Michael Farris, president of the Home School Legal Defense Association, who released the study yesterday.
"The findings shattered some myths about home schooling. Even if the home-schooling mother has just a high-school diploma, her children still score 30 to 35 points above the average of public school students on standardized testes, the study says.
"Home-schooled students' test scores, segmented by whether their parents have ever hold a teaching certificate, reveal a difference of just 3 points (88 vs 85th percentile).
"(By contrast) in the eighth grade National Assessment of Educational Progress math tests, public school students whose parents are college graduates score at the 63rd percentile, wherea students whose parents have less than a high school diploma score at the 28th percentile.
"Critics accuse home schooleres of depriving children of socialization, but the data reveal 98 percent are involved in two or more activities outside the home.

Dergelijke conclusies zijn ook gevonden in andere studies, zoals Rudner in 1999 of het onderzoek van Ray uit 1997 Home education across the United States of die uit 2001 Strengths of Their Own of het onderzoek van Fraiser Home Schooling: From the Extreme to the Mainstream

Home Educated and Now Adults

Now Adults Their Community and Civic Involvement, Views About Homeschooling, and Other Traits.

The results of Dr. Ray’s cutting-edge research defuse long-held false criticisms of homeschooling and seem to indicate that homeschooling produces successful adults who are actively involved in their communities and who continue to value education for themselves and their children.

Henk Blok.
